Three Hot Spring Havens that Won’t Break the Bank

Many travelers envision trips to the astonishing Blue Lagoon in Iceland. However, with prices currently over $600 USD per night (>$1,200 at the retreat), the Blue Lagoon is out of reach for most. Hot springs, thermal pools, the ultimate in relaxation, are accessible at a lower price.

Three options discussed here include:

  1. Chena Hot Springs - Fairbanks, Alaska
  2. El Tucano - San Carlos, Costa Rica
  3. Parkhotel Bad Arcen - Arcen, Netherlands

Chena Hot Springs - Fairbanks, Alaska

Approximately 30-45 minutes away from the Fairbanks airport (FAI), Chena Hot Springs sits nestled in the wilderness. In addition to the glorious hot springs, they offer an indoor pool and jacuzzi and outdoor jacuzzi. From the hot springs, you may see animals (we saw moose), bask under the midnight sun in the summer, or catch the northern lights over winter. This is a rustic resort with limited cell and internet.

In addition to hot springs, you can enjoy dog sledding, ice museum, horseback riding, ATV tours, or simply hang out with family and friends. Accommodations offered include yurts, cabins, lodges, and family suites with reasonable pricing.

El Tucano Resort & Thermal Spa - San Carlos, Costa Rica

About 2 hours north of San José airport (SJO) is El Tucano resort. Multiple, varying temperature, hot springs sit within the forest with some pools adjacent to a river. Keep your eyes open for toucans and sloths. Plenty of hiking here and only a few kilometers to the Arenal volcano. Bonus - a pool bar!

Parkhotel Bad Arcen - Arcen, Netherlands

Arcen, a few trains and busses (or about 2 hours by car) from Amsterdam, is located in the southeast part of the Netherlands, close to the German border. My cousin and I embarked on a journey to Arcen castle for a cosplay festival - Elfia - held at a nearby castle. We wound up missing the festival due to weather but were in awe of the hotel. We had no idea the hotel we booked had thermal water - with a high-end pool look and feel. Even had to buy swimsuits!

The location of Parkhotel Bad Arcen offers the best of both worlds. Trails within nature but the town is near as well. And the prices shown online make it hard to pass up. Sadly, because of the weather, my pictures do the hotel absolutely no justice.

If you are like me and love a massage, some hot springs, a great view, and a cocktail, these three places may be options for you!
